Volunteer Opportunities
The Volunteer Experience
Our projects are all driven by volunteers, affectionately known as our IT Do-Gooders. Despite the dubious title, we really appreciate every one of them!
The aim at ITfG is to make volunteering with us as enjoyable as possible. As well as exciting projects to work on, all volunteers gain new experiences and have opportunities to develop areas of interest.
We also recognise the challenge of earning a living while living a life, so we are flexible to suit individual schedules and workloads and operate a fully remote workplace.

Volunteering FAQs
What support do I get?
Each Do-Gooder gets a designated volunteer supervisor to help with induction and general support. Most roles are also shared to reduce pressures on any one individual and provide the organisations with some resilience.
Also, we are all part of a wider connected Do-Gooder community who are supportive and inclusive. We hope the experience builds confidence and leads to new friendships.
What are the work hours?
There are no set hours as each volunteer’s situation is different. What is important is that where commitments are made, they are based on realistic expectations.
All work is completed remotely and collaboration tools enable asynchronous teamwork. That means you can keep in the loop without being online at the same time as the rest of the team.
Some meetings will be necessary and we want to engage direct connections, but these can be planned ahead with mutual consent of participants.
What is the commitment?
As with working hours, we recognise that circumstances are different for everybody and can change quickly with the demands of family, friends and the day job.
To accommodate flexibility and provide resilience against this resource risk, individual commitments will be made iteratively within our project plans.
All we ask is that once commitments are made, if the situation changes you let your project colleagues know. That way plans can be adjusted accordingly.
In return, ITfG endeavours to agree on clear objectives with each volunteer to enable them to plan a schedule that works for them.
Can I claim expenses?
Expenses are kept to a minimum be not requiring travel and providing free or centrally funded software licenses. Any further expenses must be requested and approved by a budget owner before being committed.
Can I work from outside the UK?
We welcome volunteers from anywhere. Given that Do-Gooders often contribute outside their normal working day we are not reliant on specific time zones. But all ITfG work is carried out in English, so an adequate level of fluency is required.
